Weight Loss (Home) > Weight Loss > Surgical Weight Loss Options Surgical Weight Loss OptionsPeople who have considerable amount to loose often get benefit from weight loss surgery. A number of weight loss surgical options are available to shed weight and look slim. One of the major advantage of weight loss surgery is that, ‘many of the obese patients after having weight loss surgery shed most of their body weight within few years and able to keep of extra weight in future. Weight loss surgery also helps in resolving health issues that strongly associates with extra body weight or obesity. Before having weight loss surgery, it is necessary that a patient must qualify according to standards set by National Institute of Health, United States for this type of surgery. A weight loss surgeon closely examine a patient for the fitness and the fact that if he / she qualifies for weight loss surgery or not. Surgeons consider morbidly obese patients as potential candidate for weight loss surgery. A person is considered morbidly obese, if he / she carry 100 pounds or more extra weight or as twice in the body index scale. Health of a patient is also accountable for this type of surgery. Patients who are not in good health may suffer much following surgery with the problems associated with pancreas, intestines etc. There are three kinds of weight loss surgeries. The concept associated with all types of the surgery is common i.e. either creating the new stomach pouch inside the stomach or bypassing the small intestine. When a small pouch created inside the stomach, the stomach volume reduced and hence food intake reduced, which means consumption of less food and energy. Bypassing the small intestine reduces the duration of food digestion inside the stomach, which means absorption of fewer nutrients by the body. Billiopancreatic Diversion is one of the rarest kinds of weight loss surgery. In this surgery, about three-fourth of the stomach is removed completely and the rest of the stomach is connected with the final segment of the small intestine. This surgery carries several disadvantages with it. Dumping syndrome, lose of bone density for life, anemia are some of the sicknesses with which a patient may suffer post surgery. This surgery is more invasive and hence carries high mortality rate. This surgery does not impose restriction on food intake of patient. A patient may also suffer with tremendous weight loss, following this surgery. Roux – en Y gastric bypass is another mode of weight loss surgery. In this method, stomach either stapled or sewn in upper half portion. This creates a smaller stomach on top of the stomach. The intestines then connected to the smaller stomach and hence food bypasses. The amount of food intake decreases following this surgery. The people who receive this type of surgery shed weight at higher pace. This surgery is more invasive and patients take much time in recovery. However, the success rate of this surgery is quite high. The Vertical Banded Gastroplasty is another kind of weight loss surgery very much similar to Roux – en Y gastric bypass surgery. In this surgery, upper part of stomach stapled and intestines left intact. Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery is a newer kind of surgery and is often recommended if a patient qualifies for weight loss surgery. In this surgery, new stomach pouch is created inside the stomach. This surgery can be performed by both ways; either using open method or laparoscopically. Many of the surgeons prefer doing it laparoscopically. It is also preferable by patients, because this type involves less risk and less health complications following surgery. In this surgery, a small hole is made in the stomach and a camera is guided inside to. The camera allows the doctor to see inside the stomach. Patients following this surgery also experience weight loss at much rapid pace. These patients also able to keep of extra body weight for longer in comparison to other patients.
