Is Weight Loss Surgery Reversible?

In the Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery, the stomach is not permanently altered; instead a band is placed in the form of a hollow ring around the upper portion of the stomach which serves the purpose of new stomach.

The operative complications involved with Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery are very low and hence this surgery also has lowest mortality rate. Unlike other forms of surgery, this surgery do not involve stapling of stomach or cutting of intestines. The surgery is reversible and completely adjustable according to patient’s requirements.

 Other forms of weight loss surgery are difficult to reverse, because these surgeries involve stapling and cutting of stomach. The intestines are also re-routed. This is true of the Biliopancreatic diversion, gastric bypass, and vertical banded Gastroplasty. These surgeries are performed as open procedure.

The surgeries, which are performed as open procedure, needs much downtime, and also needs much time for healing of wounds and overall recovery.  These surgeries are not reversible and carries high risk of complications. Pregnancy is not recommended after these types of surgeries.
