What is Malabsorptive Weight Loss Surgery?

Before considering for weight loss surgery, it is very important for an overweight individual to do rigors research on different available methods of weight loss surgery. Patient considering for weight loss surgery can take help of health care professionals to find the suitable method of surgery.

There are three different available options of weight loss surgery. A patient can choose any of the option according to requirement. Weight loss surgeons often prefer performing a restrictive or malabsorptive surgery or a combination of these. However, malasorptive surgery is most preferred. This surgery minimizes the volume of stomach and hence following surgery an individual food intake decreases dramatically. The surgery also limits the nutrients to the body, which sometimes force an individual to suffer with vitamins and minerals deficiency. Limiting nutrition is one of the major demerits of this surgery.

Biliopancreatic diversion is one of the major kinds of malabsorptive surgery, which surgeons prefer to perform. The process of this surgery is very much invasive and does alteration of the entire digestive system. In this weight loss surgery about 25 percent of stomach is completely removed and the stomach pouch is connected to the small intestine and then with the large intestine. Thus, when a person eats food, it bypasses and stays for less time in the digestive tract. This surgery does not allow nutrients to reach to the bile or pancreas. These are the areas where nutrient absorbs for bodily use. The surgery reduces both nutrients and calorie intake of the body, significantly.

Biliopancreatic diversion surgery is highly invasive, though offers some advantages as well. First- a patient absorbs less number of calories and nutrients and hence loose weight significantly, following surgery. Second- This surgery do not restrict the food intake of individual because of large stomach pouch. Third- this surgery offers total weight loss. The surgery is preferable to those who carry many extra kilos of fat in the body.

There are many disadvantages of having this type of weight loss surgery. The surgery requires more stapling and cutting of stomach and bowel. Because of its’ invasive nature, it offers more health complications. Mortality rate of this surgery is also high. Following surgery, wounds require much time to heal. Patient following this surgery takes a number of weeks to heal and recover. These patients are bound to suffer with health complications like dumping syndrome, cramping of stomach and ulcers. These diseases occur because food passes very quickly through digestive system.

Because of above mentioned complications a person also suffer with nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. Post surgery, these patients requires life long care for bone weakness, anemia, and malnutrition. The surgery is irreversible. Some patients also require taking vitamin supplements on regular basis for rest of the years.
