In this surgery, doctors place a band inside the stomach to make the stomach small. Thus, band helps a patient consuming less food, and consuming less food means having fewer calories. This surgery do not obstruct in normal digestion process and absorption of vitamins and minerals. 

Another type of weight loss surgery is malabsorptive surgery. This surgery is much invasive. Following this surgery, the digestive tract of a patient shortens. Shortening of digestive tract means reduction in food intake and calories.

Sometimes, a combination of restrictive and malabsorptive method is also preferred. Such combination restricts the food intake and reduces the calories.
